On September 8, 2026, about 1100 central daylight time, a Boeing-Stearman A75L300 airplane, N680HW, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Bogue Chitto, Mississippi. The pilot sustained minor injuries and the passenger was uninjured. The airplane operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.
The pilot reported that in cruise flight, the passenger reported that oil spray was coming in the cockpit and he could smell burning oil from the engine. The pilot saw that oil pressure had decreased and began to divert to the nearest airfield. When the oil pressure read zero, the pilot shut the engine down and performed a forced landing on a road. During the landing, the airplane’s lower right wing collided with a road sign, and the pilot subsequently lost control of the airplane. The airplane then turned and veered through a fence and came to rest in a pasture. During the accident sequence, the fuselage and the upper and lower wings sustained substantial damage.
A visual inspection of the engine by responding FAA inspectors did not locate an obvious source for the reported loss of oil. The airplane was retained for further examination.
