- History of Flight:
On October 12, 2026, at about 1422 local time, a privately-registered Quicksilver MXL II, N947BX, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident at Chehalem Airpark (17S), Newberg, Oregon. The sole pilot onboard was fatally injured.

The FAA reported that the airplane was landing when it veered off the runway and crashed into a fence. The airplane came to rest upright and there was no fire.

The pilot, aged 58, initially survived the accident, but died later as his conditions "worsened rapidly." A search of the public FAA pilot records did not yield any results.

The two-seat, high-wing, single engine airplane, serial number 001, was manufactured in 2020. It featured a primary structure that consisted of fabric-covered metal tubing braced with flying wires. It was powered by a Rotax 503 DC/DI engine, mounted in a "pusher" configuration.

Chehalem Airpark is a public airport located 4 miles northwest of Newberg, Oregon. The airport's field elevation was 190 ft. The airport features a single asphalt runway 7/25 which is 2285 x 40 ft.

- Additional Information:

According to Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 61, the pilot was required to hold at least a student pilot certificate, with appropriate solo endorsements, to operate the airplane.

The accident aircraft, while considered an ultralight, was registered as an airplane. According to FAA FAR Part 103, an ultralight vehicle is a vehicle that: If powered: (1) Weighs less than 254 pounds empty weight, excluding floats and safety devices which are intended for deployment in a potentially catastrophic situation; (2) Has a fuel capacity not exceeding 5 U.S. gallons; (3) Is not capable of more than 55 knots calibrated airspeed at full power in level flight; and (4) Has a power-off stall speed which does not exceed 24 knots calibrated airspeed.

The accident airplane had a total fuel capacity of 6-gallons and weighed over 300 pounds.

On October 10, 2026, at about 1513 local time, a Diamond DA20-C1 Eclipse, N96YY, registered to Shortt Aircraft Leasing LLC and being operated by the CTI Professional Flight Training flight school, sustained substantial damage when it was involved in a forced landing near Bishop International Airport (FNT/KFNT), Flint, Michigan. The sole student pilot onboard was not injured. The solo training flight originated from Willow Run Airport (YIP/KYIP),
Detroit, Michigan, at 1401.

The FAA reported that the airplane experienced engine issues, landed on the interstate and went down a slope into brush.

An individual driving on the highway captured the airplane during its descent. The airplane touched down wings level on the highway, but departed the right side shoulder and went down a slope. The airplane came to rest upright against a treeline and there was no post crash fire. The left wing was destroyed, and the tail was severed.

According to Air Traffic Control (ATC) audio and preliminary ADS-B data, at about 1505, the student pilot was cleared for a right downwind to land on runway 18. A few seconds later, the controller cancelled the landing clearance and asked the student to extend the downwind (after entering it). At 1510, the controller told the pilot "base turn at your discretion, runway 18, cleared to land, say parking." The student readback and stated that she wanted to taxi back and get flight following to YIP. The controller advised the student about traffic (a Diamond Star) 4 miles northwest of her position that was on approach to runway 18. At 1512, and while on short final for runway 18, the pilot declared an emergency and reported an engine out. Winds at the time were from 170 at 10 knots. The pilot stated that she can't make it (to the airport) and that was going to try to land on the highway. After a minute of silence, the pilot asked the controller to call emergency services (after the airplane came to rest, note that the pilot was doing correct readbacks to the controller, but I didn't mention it every time.)

The commercial pilot/builder was not injured. The local flight originated from the airport at 1059.

The pilot stated on his personal blog that: "So, despite all my precautions, what I feared I might some day do, I did. No excuse; I forgot."

The pilot added:

"Now I know a little of how a father feels who, while cleaning his gun, accidently shoots his child.

The good news, so far as there is any, is that the damage to the airframe is surprisingly slight. There is no damage whatever to primary structure. and the only unusable component is the airbrake, which took most of the punishment and, along with the exhaust pipe and the inboard ends of the flap trailing edges, held the belly off the ground. The rest of it will be easy to fix; the only thing that needs extensive repair is the airbrake. (And of course the exhaust pipe, half of which was ground away. It gave its life, you might say, to save the others.)

The bad news, however, is that both propeller blades are ruined, and the engine, having suffered a prop strike, needs to be torn down and inspected. As one of very few poor people who own airplanes, I can't possibly afford any of this. The only way to restore the plane to flying status would be to sell it; a no-win situation."

The pilot, aged 83, holds a commercial pilot certificate with an airplane single engine land/sea and airplane multi engine land and an airplane instrument ratings. He also holds a rotorcraft/helicoper, rotorcraft/gyroplane, glider, and lighter-than-air-balloon ratings. The pilot's FAA BasicMed was dated 12/26/2021.

The pilot holds a repairman/experimental aircraft builder certificate for the incident airplane which was issued on 10/7/2003. He also holds a similar certificate for the original Melmoth 1 which was destroyed in an accident by another airplane in 1982.
