- History of Flight:
On May 1, 2026, at about 1922 local time, a privately-registered Ryan Navion, N8618H, sustained substantial damage when it crashed in the vicinity of Quabbin Reservoir due to engine issues shortly after takeoff from Orange Municipal Airport (ORE/KORE), Orange, Massachusetts. The private pilot sustained serious injuries. The flight originated from KORE at 1914.

According to flight-tracking history, on October 18, 2025, the airplane arrived at KORE following a flight from New Hampshire, and that was supposedly the last flight before the accident flight.

ADS-B data from Flightradar24 shows that the airplane departed runway 32 and entered a climbing right turn to an altitude of 1,900 ft before proceeding south. About 6 minutes after takeoff, the airplane entered a left turn and was heading north back towards the airport, but ended up coming down in the water.

Preliminary information provided by the FAA and witnesses stated that the airplane experienced engine issues shortly after takeoff from KORE and was trying to make it back to the runway, but crashed into the water. The NTSB is investigating.

The pilot held a private pilot certificate, last issued/updated on 8/12/2003, with a rating for airplane single engine land. His BasicMed course was dated 7/4/2021.

The wreckage consisted of the entire airplane. Both wings remained attached to the airframe and showed little impact damage, the rear fuselage was buckled, the tail remained attached to the fuselage. The engine remained partially attached to the airframe, and all three propeller blades remained attached to the propeller hub.
