- History of Flight:
On October 12, 2026, at about 1422 local time, a privately-registered Quicksilver MXL II, N947BX, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident at Chehalem Airpark (17S), Newberg, Oregon. The sole pilot onboard was fatally injured.
The FAA reported that the airplane was landing when it veered off the runway and crashed into a fence. The airplane came to rest upright and there was no fire.
The pilot, aged 58, initially survived the accident, but died later as his conditions "worsened rapidly." A search of the public FAA pilot records did not yield any results.
The two-seat, high-wing, single engine airplane, serial number 001, was manufactured in 2020. It featured a primary structure that consisted of fabric-covered metal tubing braced with flying wires. It was powered by a Rotax 503 DC/DI engine, mounted in a "pusher" configuration.
Chehalem Airpark is a public airport located 4 miles northwest of Newberg, Oregon. The airport's field elevation was 190 ft. The airport features a single asphalt runway 7/25 which is 2285 x 40 ft.
- Additional Information:
According to Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 61, the pilot was required to hold at least a student pilot certificate, with appropriate solo endorsements, to operate the airplane.
The accident aircraft, while considered an ultralight, was registered as an airplane. According to FAA FAR Part 103, an ultralight vehicle is a vehicle that: If powered: (1) Weighs less than 254 pounds empty weight, excluding floats and safety devices which are intended for deployment in a potentially catastrophic situation; (2) Has a fuel capacity not exceeding 5 U.S. gallons; (3) Is not capable of more than 55 knots calibrated airspeed at full power in level flight; and (4) Has a power-off stall speed which does not exceed 24 knots calibrated airspeed.
The accident airplane had a total fuel capacity of 6-gallons and weighed over 300 pounds.
