- History of Flight:
On August 3, 2026, at about 0953 local time, a Piper PA-28-151 Cherokee Warrior, N41622, registered to Stingray LLC, was not damaged following a forced landing on the I-10 in Pensacola, Florida. The flight instructor and student pilot were not injured. The training flight originated from Pensacola Regional Airport (PNS/KPNS), Pensacola, Florida, at 0920.
The airplane arrived at KPNS on July 29, 2026, following a flight from Foley Municipal Airport (5R4), Foley, Alabama.
The airplane departed KPNS and entered a climb to the north to an altitude of 3,300 ft. About 18 minutes into the flight, the airplane conducted two loops and returned towards KPNS. The airplane was unable to make the airport and eventually landed on the I-10.
Preliminary air traffic control audio shows that the flight instructor radioed the following: "We do now have a burning oil smell in the cockpit, I don’t know if we’re going to make the airport. We are not making the airport, we’re going down on I-10."
The FAA reported that the airplane landed on a highway due to a loss of oil pressure.
Dashcam footage showed that the airplane came in fast and close to a commercial truck before avoiding an overhead metal sign. The airplane subsequently touched down on the highway and was not damaged during the process.
The flight instructor, aged 21, held a commercial pilot certificate with an airplane single engine and multi engine land rating and an instrument rating. Her first class FAA medical was issued on July 2026. The pilot also held a flight instructor certificate with a rating for airplane single engine land.
